Awwh Shucks.

We meant to "do school" today. Really! But a friend in need is a friend indeed! She had corn to put up that is no fun when you have to do it alone.
So when she called this morning and asked if I could help I said "Sure no problem! We'll be there at noon!"
Oh the corn. Lots and lots of corn. Shuckin' corn is nothing but I'm here to tell you, it's NOT the shucking, it's the DEWORMING! UCK! Oh. my. God. Worms are so gross.

After all the shucking we needed to scrub it all. Gotta get all the silks off! That is NOT "good eats"

Then comes cutting it off the cob. Wow, is my thumb tired!

Next, put it on the stove with a box of butter and let it come to a boil!

Between the both of us, we managed enough stock pots to get it all done.

Finally, we put it all up in family size servings and put it in the freezer!

Not a bit of it went to waste. Buttercup and Cannon enjoyed the treat!

"Here Chick, Chick, Chick!" Get it? Chick, chick, chick? Har dee har har! I kill me.
The chickens enjoyed the "gross parts" UCK,, I just thought of the worms again!

While the corn was cooling, we snapped beans, LOTS of beans.

Look closely, can you find the worms?

It was a lot of hard work but it was also a lot of fun! We fancied ourselves "country girls" today!
Next- Banana Peppers and Tomatos! Anyone have any good recipes?

Hey, that looks like school to me!

My mom used to have a gadget for removing corn from the cob. It was just a circle blade on a handle. She'd jab the cob onto a nail set through some scrap wood so it was sitting upright. Slide the blade down the cob and the kernals come off in half a second. Very handy!

I've seen one of those. The best way is to take the top half of the kernal off (slicing it in half essentially) and then take the back of your knife and squeeze the rest of the kernal out. That way you don't get any hard bits in what you eat. It also makes a sweeter end product. It's a little more work but it's worth the effort!

That has been our "school" all summer.

My aunt was telling me about a slicer with a long blade they have that is supposed to get the kernels and the cream. Our corn was a flop this year so I guess I don't need to worry about it.

I posted a tomato soup recipe I canned that I was pretty impressed with.

Is it something like the one in the link? That would be so cool! I wonder how well they work?
Sorry to hear that the corn was a flop. I hope to put some in next year!

Hi Crystal, thanks for stopping by The Kids...blog. I couldn't find a way to email you, so I'm just going to leave a comment. I totally agree with your comment about "non-Christians" in the Bible. After I wrote the review, I thought more about it and realized the importance of that element of the story. I'm so glad I finished the book.
